JSW Jetour T2 SUV India Launch: Hybrid Powertrain, Design, Price Expectations

JSW Jetour T2 SUV India Launch: Hybrid Powertrain, Design, Price Expectations

The Jindal South West Group (JSW) is preparing for a major milestone as it steps into the Indian automotive market independently with its first passenger vehicle launch later this year. According to recent reports, the company is actively working on introducing the Jetour T2 SUV in India. Moreover, this move marks JSW’s clear intent to establish a standalone automotive identity beyond its existing partnerships.

While JSW already brings automotive experience through its joint venture with MG Motor India—operating as JSW MG Motor India—this upcoming SUV will take a different route. Instead, the Jetour T2 will arrive under JSW Motors Limited, a separate entity that operates independently of the MG collaboration. Consequently, this launch signals JSW’s long-term ambition to build its own portfolio of vehicles tailored for Indian consumers.

JSW and Chery Partnership Explained

To make the Jetour T2 a reality in India, JSW has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery. Notably, Chery launched the Jetour brand globally in 2018, positioning it as a lifestyle-focused SUV marque. Moreover, according to an Autocar report, the India-bound SUV will carry JSW branding and model names, even though it will be based on the internationally sold Jetour T2.

Therefore, while the vehicle benefits from Chery’s global engineering and platform expertise, JSW will localize the branding and market positioning. This approach allows the company to leverage proven global products while building trust under an Indian corporate identity.

Jetour T2 Powertrain and Hybrid Expectations

Globally, the Jetour T2 offers a wide range of powertrain options. These include traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) setups as well as advanced plug-in hybrid systems. Additionally, buyers in international markets can choose between Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configurations, depending on their usage needs.

However, JSW has publicly emphasized its focus on sustainable mobility. Therefore, industry expectations strongly suggest that the Indian launch will prioritize the Jetour T2 i-DM plug-in hybrid variant. This version uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor, offering a balance between performance and efficiency. Meanwhile, JSW has not officially confirmed the final powertrain lineup, leaving room for further announcements closer to launch.

Jetour T2 Exterior Design and Platform

From a design perspective, the Jetour T2 stands out immediately. It adopts a boxy, upright SUV silhouette that draws clear inspiration from iconic off-roaders such as the Land Rover Defender. Moreover, despite its rugged appearance, the SUV uses a monocoque construction, which typically delivers better ride comfort and handling on paved roads.

The five-seat version measures approximately 4.7 metres in length and 2 metres in width, giving it a strong and commanding road presence. Additionally, the Jetour T2 is also available internationally in a seven-seat configuration. Consequently, JSW could consider introducing the larger version in India depending on market response and demand.

Manufacturing Plans in India

JSW plans to assemble the Jetour T2 locally at its upcoming greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Moreover, local assembly will help the company manage costs while gradually increasing localization levels. As a result, JSW can price the SUV more competitively over time.

According to current timelines, the Jetour T2 is expected to reach Indian showrooms by the third quarter of this year. Meanwhile, JSW continues to build its supplier ecosystem and dealership strategy to support the launch.

Expected India Price and Market Positioning

As of now, JSW has not revealed official pricing or positioning details for the Jetour T2 in India. However, global pricing offers some reference. In the UAE, the Jetour T2 i-DM retails for around Rs 35 lakh (approximately AED 1,44,000). Therefore, the Indian price could vary significantly depending on taxes, localization, and variant mix.

On the other hand, if JSW manages aggressive localization, the SUV could undercut some established premium rivals. Consequently, the Jetour T2 may appeal to buyers looking for a rugged, feature-rich SUV with hybrid technology at a relatively accessible price point.

What the Jetour T2 Means for JSW Motors

With the Jetour T2, JSW Motors takes its first independent step into India’s highly competitive SUV segment. Moreover, by combining global engineering, hybrid technology, and local manufacturing, the company positions itself for long-term growth. Consequently, this launch could set the foundation for a broader JSW-branded vehicle lineup in the years ahead.
